Buzzword Buzzes To Victory In the German Derby´

It was the 141st running of the German Derby with the ban on foreign trained horses taking part having been lifted in 1993, and now, seventeen years later in 2010 Godolphin's strapping chestnut colt Buzzword became the first foreign entry to land the Group I Deutsches Derby. The son of Pivotal had been prominent throughout the race and looked really good when striding forcefully into the straight to take the lead more than a furlong out and run on well to draw clear. This was Buzzword's 13th outing and his second victory at Pattern level after having won the Group III Prix La Rochette as a juvenile. Buzzword has already done a lot, but victory here was not really expected. He placed in the Group I Prix Jean Luc Lagardere and the Group II Richmaond Stakes at two as well as ending fifth in the Dewhurst Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf respectively. This season, he disappointed in the English 2000 Guineas, ran fourth in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and then finished eighth in the Epsom Derby. His final outing prior to this Derby came in the King Edward VII Stakes where he finished third to Monterosso whom he now beat.

Buzzword is one of 16 Group I winners and 45 Pattern winners by Cheveley Park's champion sire Pivotal for whom he is the first Derby winner. Pivotal's other Classic winners are last year's Epsom and Irish Oaks heroine Sariska, the Irish Oaks winning fillies Saoire and Halfway To Heaven, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains victor Falco as well as the 2008 German 1000 victrix Briseida and the German Oaks winner Sylvester Lady in Germany. The Group I Nunthorpe Stakes hero Pivotal is by the Nureyev horse Polar falcon and has emergedas one of the very best if not the best representative of the Nureyev sire line with Nureyev being a three-parts-brother to the leading sire and major Classic influence Sadler's Wells. Pivotal's granddam is the Group I Premio Lydia Tesio victrix Stufida as a daughter of the leading stayer influence Bustino.

Bred by Darley, Buzzword is out of the twelve furlong Listed Derby du Midi winning and Prix de Malleret third placed Danehill mare Bustling. Pivotal's other Group I winner Siyouni was also bred from a mare by Danehill, the above mentioned Saoire is out of daughter of the Danzig horse Polish Precedent while Pivotal's Group III winning daughter Girouette has the Danzig horse Anabaa as a damsire. Buzzword's second dam is the Kris mare Carnival Spirit who produced the Group winning Rainbow Quest horse Exaltation, his Listed winning own sister Carniola as well as another Listed winner by Acatenango named Baranquilla. Moreover, Carnival Spirit is the third dam of the multiple Group I winning Galileo filly Lush Lashes whose sire is by Nureyev's close relative Sadler's Wells while her dam is by the Danzig horse Anabaa again. Buzzword's third dam is the Welsh Pageant mare Fiesta Fun whose best performer is the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning Rainbow Quest horse Saumarez. Saumarez leading performers as a damsire include the Epsom Derby hero Authorized by the Sadler's Wells horse Montjeu and Monsun Derby Italiano winning son Gentlewave.
